Elsa Majimbo Is Beaming –  Interview with Okay Africa

Elsa Majimbo

Standing in the doorway of an old convent in Queens, New York, the 22-year-old Kenyan sensation commands attention. Draped in an ankle-length black coat, her Afro defying gravity and gold jewelry shimmering, Majimbo cuts a majestic figure. On location for the OkayAfrica digital cover shoot, she enjoys a brief respite before being mobbed by enthusiastic schoolchildren. The excitement they exhibit is a testament to Majimbo’s skyrocketing fame—a fame that seems to be divinely orchestrated according to her own beliefs.

Majimbo’s journey to global recognition began with her cheeky, lo-fi comic videos during the pandemic lockdown. Her brazen humor and well-timed laughter offered a much-needed respite for millions worldwide, catapulting her into the limelight. However, Majimbo has since transitioned from comedy to modeling, leaving behind her playful online persona for a more sophisticated image. “That’s a phase of my life that was there, but I’ve left it behind,” she reveals, emphasizing her evolution.

Majimbo’s aspirations have transformed dramatically since her early days of fame. Now living in Los Angeles, her social media presence reflects a life of luxury, filled with glamorous events and high-fashion moments. She signed with IMG Models and WME in 2022, landing campaigns with top brands like Valentino and Coach. Majimbo’s new focus is clear: she aims to dominate the modeling world with the same confidence and determination that fueled her comedic success

Despite her outward confidence, Majimbo acknowledges the challenges she faces in the industry, particularly racism and misogyny. She candidly discusses her surprise at the support she’s received from white individuals, contrasting it with the pitfalls caused by some Black counterparts. Additionally, Majimbo has faced significant criticism from her native Kenya, where online attacks have been prevalent. Nevertheless, she remains unbothered, choosing to focus on her successes and future goals.

Financial stability is a cornerstone of Majimbo’s confidence. She credits her parents for instilling financial literacy and ensuring her involvement in the Kenyan property market. This financial security, combined with her strong Christian faith, empowers her to stand up to powerful figures in the industry. “I serve a living God, you’re not above Him,” she states resolutely.

Majimbo’s ambitions extend beyond modeling. She is keen to emulate her mentor, Steve Harvey, by taking ownership of her content and exploring opportunities in production and acting. Her self-titled documentary short, “Elsa,” released in 2023, marks the beginning of her journey into these new realms. Majimbo is determined to maintain control over her projects, ensuring she reaps the full benefits of her work.
